As Senior Director of Innovation at On, Nils Arne Altrogge shapes the future of performance products and manufacturing at the brand. Since joining On in 2013 as a Masters Thesis Student, Nils has progressed from intern to innovation leader with roles that include Head of Technology Innovation in 2022, Head of Innovation Portfolio Strategy in 2023 and Director of Innovation Technology & Research in 2024. He has driven the development of many major product technologies, including the double layer of CloudTec® for the Cloudmonster and the CloudTec Phase® cushioning technology that defines the CloudSurfer and CloudTilt franchises. Nils has also spearheaded On’s sustainability-focused projects, including the first Cyclon™ collection – running shoes and apparel designed to be recycled – and CleanCloud® – a high-performance foam made from carbon emissions. Most recently, Nils led the team developing LightSpray™, On’s automated manufacturing technology for performance uppers. Stepping into his current position in 2025, he continues to advance new inventions with high impact on performance and low impact on the planet through meaningful science and teamwork.
Nils arrived at On straight from his academic studies at FH Technikum Wien, where he earned a master’s in sports equipment technology to build off of his bachelors in applied sports sciences from Paderborn University. Outside of work, he enjoys an active lifestyle with his young family, spending time outdoors and embracing a variety of sports – from tennis, running and hiking to cross-country skiing.
